Yema Sous Marine 'Tomahawk' 1970s Vintage Chronograph Watch - Valjoux 7734

A beautiful vintage chronograph in excellent condition with a unique dial design full of 1970s character. This watch, produced in France by Yema in the early 70s, is nicknamed the "Tomahawk" due to its distinctive dial. The dial features a beautiful, bronze sunburst pattern with the asymmetrical running seconds and 30-minute register sub-dials outlined in white, resembling the head of an axe. There is also a chapter ring with tachymeter scale and a date window at 6 o'clock. The hands and indices feature original lume which has aged to a lovely, creamy tone.

The tonneau shaped case has excellent vintage character and is well proportioned at 40mm. The case is in sharp condition with sunburst brushing to the tops of the lugs and polished case sides. The Bakelite, friction-fit bezel rotates both directions without clicks and shows some signs of age.

The acrylic crystal is in good condition with a small blemish by 12 o'clock.

The Valjoux calibre 7734 is a Swiss-made manual-wind chronograph, produced until 1974 and widely used in many iconic chronographs of the era, including Heuer Carreras. The top pusher stops and starts the chronograph while the bottom pusher resets it. The watch is wound and set via the crown, and the date can be quick-set by moving the hands past 12 o'clock to advance the date, then back past 10 o'clock before moving the hands forward past 12 o'clock to advance the date again.

The watch is running, keeping excellent time, and the chronograph functions perfectly.

The watch is offered on a modern, genuine leather, black rally strap which excellently compliments the vintage character of the watch.

A highly collectible and desirable piece, this reference was recently featured in Hodinkee's 'Bring a Loupe' weekly column. This is an excellent opportunity to own a great-value and uncommon vintage chronograph that is a true embodiment of 1970s design language.
